This is my gospel according to the middle. The space between strategic vision and executional excellence. Between the people who make the slides and the people who pretend to read them. Between ideals and invoices. It is not heaven or hell. It is the waiting room of both.

After ten months of managing, mentoring, mediating, and mildly disassociating, I have realised something. Middle management is the most spiritual position in the corporate hierarchy. You are close enough to the ground to feel the pain, but high enough to see the absurdity. You become the enlightened fool — aware that nothing matters, yet caring enough to fix it anyway.

Lesson 1: Let Go of Attachment

The universe does not reward effort equally. Sometimes the person who worked least gets promoted first. Sometimes your best idea dies in a SharePoint folder named Archive_2023_FINAL_v7.
The secret is not detachment. It is graceful futility. You do your best knowing the system is imperfect, and you keep doing it anyway. Because enlightenment does not arrive with success; it arrives when you stop taking incompetence personally.

Lesson 2: Compassion Is a KPI

Forget performance metrics. Measure how many people breathe easier after talking to you. Measure how many times you have turned anger into laughter, panic into perspective. True leadership is energetic hygiene; keeping your team’s spirits clean even when the air smells like burnout and corporate deodorant. You will not find this in any competency model, but it is the only metric that means anything.

Lesson 3: Suffering Is Mandatory, Sainthood Is Optional

Every day, you die a small death to your ego, your plans, your will to send one more gentle reminder. But somewhere between the budget cuts and the strategy decks, you start laughing. You stop trying to win the system and start dancing with it. You learn that peace is not found in control. It is found in surrender. Enlightenment happens when you realise the simulation is not broken. It is performance art.

Lesson 4: The Buddha Had Boundaries

The middle manager’s version of nirvana is not infinite patience. It is the ability to say no with a smile. It is blocking off your lunch break as if it were sacred ground. It is protecting your weekends like they are endangered species.

You cannot lead from depletion. You can only martyr yourself so many times before HR rebrands it as attrition. Boundaries are not resistance. They are self-respect disguised as calendar management.

Lesson 5: Nothing Is Real Except People

You will forget the reports, the dashboards, the cross-functional synergies. What will remain are the faces: the ones you mentored, the ones who taught you, the ones who made you laugh when you wanted to quit.
That is the real legacy. Not transformation programs or adoption metrics, but the quiet moments when someone felt seen because you chose humanity over hierarchy.

And that is how I found clarity. Not in Bali, but in the comments section of a DevOps task. Not through incense, but through Outlook reminders. Not by renouncing the world, but by learning to survive it with grace and a dark sense of humour. Enlightenment does not mean escaping the work cult(ure). It means staying awake and sane inside it.
